Laura

I can't recall when I met Laura, but it must have been via Margie Owens-Klotz. Laura was so nice. Laura had a sweet smile. She wasn't one to take the spotlight, but I remember her as smart, attentive and very kind. She will be missed.

Meeting Laura at Moraine Valley Community College - 1981

It was August, 1981 when I met Laura Totleben. We were both enrolled in an accounting class at Moraine Valley Community College in Palos Hills, IL, where I now teach. 😂

I had an automatic pencil and the end broke off making it impossible to write.

I turned to the quiet girl next to me and said, “My lead just broke.” If I remember correctly, Laura pulled out a plastic pencil box and handed me one of the many pencils from inside of the box.

That day will live in infamy as a more than four decades friendship was forged.

I was Laura’s first Orland Park friend as Totlebens had recently moved to the Chicago area from Bettendorf, IA. Laura’s dad was a manager for Sears.

In accounting, Laura and I always sat next to each other and both enjoyed seeing our very attractive male instructor who looked like he…

Remembering Laura

I met Laura about four years ago when I was just starting out in the apartment industry. She immediately made me feel welcome and that was just who she was. Every interaction I had with her was genuine, full of warmth, humor, and that unspoken understanding you only have with certain people. We shared inside jokes, and talked a little crap.

Not long ago, it was my birthday. Laura and Mike surprised me with a thoughtful gift. Laura handed it to me and said, “This is to tell you we care about you. Happy Birthday.” The gift was a small wooden memo board that read “Always stay humble and kind.” It meant so much more than just a present, it was a reflection of how she saw me, and how she lived her life.

If you don’t know me, I’m from the Midwest lol something Laura and I joked about…

I met Lolo at the theatre. My birthday July 31st Lo’s Aug 1st. On our 21st birthday we did 21 swigs of Jack Daniels. I know I never touched Jack again cause of that night! After a few years of working together we became very good friends and decided to rent our 1st apartment together. We bought our 1st pet. I’m sure you all know about Jimmy. His whole name was Jimmy Kuchenbecker (my maiden name) Totleben Buffet. Our apartment was on the third floor. We both loved storms, so when we both had a night off together, we would position the couch in front of the sliding glass doors and watch the storm go by. We went on several vacations together. How we choose to go to Key West (I know everyone is thinking because of Jimmy Buffet but it wasn’t) We put the map of the United States up on a wall and put a blind fold on and threw a dart, we gave ourselves 4 tries, 2 each, we picked the best place of the throws, yes Jimmy Buffet won out. One of our weekend getaways was decided by me choosing the expressway and the direction and Lo choosing a number between 50 and 200, that was the miles to drive, our getaway was Rantoul, Illinois. Doesn’t sound like it would be much fun but you all know if you’re with Lo you are going to have fun! We really didn’t need to go anywhere we had a lot of laughs no matter where we were. I’m sure Margie and Lo told stories of going to New Orleans, So much fun!!!

I will miss Lolo always and I’ll have a smile on my face thinking of our times together!
